St Cyprian’s Church
Tuesday 2 October to Friday 5 October. Open 11am – 6pm
Opening reception: 5-8pm, Wednesday 3 October 2018
Edel Assanti is pleased to present ‘Stand’, a site-specific work by Jodie Carey reconfigured for a four-day exhibition over the course of Frieze, staged at St Cyprian’s Church near Baker Street. The Victorian church’s Gothic Revival architecture provides an evocative new context for one of Carey’s most ambitious installations, consisting of fifty vertical earth-cast sculptures.
Carey’s recent work has explored the most basic and fundamental methods of art-making, including carving, weaving and wall-drawing. The earthcasts that compose Stand are produced by casting directly into the ground: Carey buries lengths of decades-old salvaged timber in the soil and then lifts them out to form rudimentary moulds. Into these imprints she pours plaster which, once solidified and excavated, bears remnants of the soil, stones and plant roots absorbed during this process.
The work has now been reconfigured for St Cyprian’s, a spectacular Victorian church that provides an evocative new context for one of Carey’s most ambitious installations. The presentation will run for four-days over the course of Frieze London.
